What Are Architectural Window Treatments?

November 2, 2026

Architectural window treatments are long-lasting, purpose-built shading solutions designed to hide hardware, work with a window’s specific geometry (standard or specialty shapes), and complement the surrounding interior’s overall design. In other words, custom or stock shades, blinds, and shutters may fit the windows, but architectural treatments become part of the building.

At Window Modes, we have fabricated custom window treatments in New York since 1952. We build these systems for commercial and residential projects and work directly with the dealers, designers, and architects who plan shading before drywall goes up, not after.

Keep reading to see how each system works and where we fit into your next spec.

Architectural vs. Standard Shades

A standard shade mounts on an exposed headrail and visible brackets. An architectural treatment hides that hardware, tucking the shade into a ceiling pocket, behind a soffit, or inside custom millwork so it disappears once raised. Its aesthetic is more refined; you notice the differences immediately.

Our Top Architectural Window Treatments

At Window Modes, we fabricate and distribute several systems that solve different parts of an architectural shading project, from concealment to motorization to custom track.

Here’s where each one fits, starting with the system built to disappear completely.

Blindspace® Recesses the Shade into the Ceiling

We are the authorized US distributor of Blindspace®, an aluminum concealment system designed and manufactured in Sweden. A Blindspace® pocket installs into the ceiling framing during construction, and a patented Safety Hinge closure, not gravity, holds it shut.

The hinge lets the system operate in challenging orientations, such as horizontal skylights, sloped openings, and reverse-operation shades that a standard pocket can't handle. Once the shade rolls up, the pocket disappears into the ceiling, leaving no headrail in sight.

Blindspace® also makes TrackTrim, a companion system that recesses flush into the ceiling to conceal Somfy, Lutron, and Crestron drapery tracks.

Roller Shades Fit Any Motor Protocol

We build roller shades in-house, too, matching each shade to its motor before it leaves the shop rather than adapting stock components on-site. Building in-house gives us the control to handle projects that standard products can't, such as wide openings with multiple panels ganged onto a single tube, highly customized shapes, and any motor protocol a project requires.

Motorized assemblies can utilize Somfy Zigbee, Somfy RTS, Lutron, and Rollease Acmeda platforms, so the roller shades can run on the same app, remote, or smart-home system as everything else on the project.

Our team waits for drawing approval before fabrication begins and remains available for spec questions throughout the project.

Drapery Track Bends to Fit the Room

We also fabricate drapery tracks in straight runs, curved bends, and 90° corners, as well as drapery motorization options that you won't find at standard suppliers. Track can also be recessed into the ceiling using Blindspace® TrackTrim and is best worked in at the design phase.

Receiving the recessed TrackTrim and curved drapery track from the same supplier means seamless operation, a great fit, and less worry for you. Once you offer these architectural options to your drapery clients, they won't want to shop for window treatments anywhere else.
